Karl Schloz
- "A Smooth One"
by
Art Hilgart
The
young guitarist Karl Schloz credits Bucky Pizzarelli as his inspiration,
which shows in his chording. However, his superb single-string solos
recall the light touch of Johnny Smith.
That
resemblance is intensified on the four tracks where the trio is
joined by Harry Allen´s fine tenor and the effect is that
of the sides Smith recorded for Roost variously with Stan Getz,
Zoot Sims and Paul Quinchette.
In ensembles and in solos, Tony Monte´s piano blends nicely
in the group. His sensitivity has been a ticket to accompanying
singers, including Marlene VerPlanck and Peggy Lee. Steve LaSpina´s
bass complements the guitar without competing with it.
The
entire disc is an hour of charm.
